NY GOVERNOR CUOMO PROPOSES ALL-CRIMES DNA BILL
Could a sample taken from a convicted offender today help solve hundreds of cold crime cases in New York tomorrow? It could, and New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo has proposed legislation that would help more crime victims and their families receive the justice they deserve.
As of today, DNA is only collected from individuals convicted of Penal Law felonies and a few misdemeanors. In spite of the limitations that mean less than half of all crimes on NY's books requires DNA collection, the DNA databank has helped in over 2,700 convictions - as well as exonerated 27 innocent people.
The All-Crimes DNA Bill would collect DNA from anyone convicted of any felony or Penal Law misdemeanor in New York. By expanding the database for evidence, the All-Crimes DNA Bill could help solve cold cases.
Safe Horizon supports this critical legislation, which would give more crime victims peace of mind as well as their chance to see those who've committed crimes convicted. Learn more by clicking here.
AWARE: NATIONAL HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND SLAVERY
Two years ago President Barack Obama declared January as National Human Trafficking and Slavery Awareness Month,to bring attention to one the most prolific and brutal criminal practices that exist today.
Around the world, more than 12 million children, women, and menare subjected to modern-day slavery, suffering violations of their human rights as they are exploited for labor or for sex. Approximately 1.3 million children become victims of trafficking every year alone.
At Safe Horizon, our Anti-Trafficking Program is part of global efforts to fight human trafficking and to restore freedom and dignity to victims who deserve their rights and lives back. In January and every month of the year, we work to support victims and to educate and promote anti-trafficking efforts through our training services, and through partnerships with other organizations fighting this crime.
In January, join us to commemorate victims of trafficking and to support organizations and individuals working to end modern-day slavery. Learn more by visiting our Anti-Trafficking Program page.
